Presented by Dr. Jonathan Poole, PE, Principal with MJ2 Consulting, Cedar Park, TX In an ideal world, concrete would only be placed on temperate, cloudy days. Reality for field concrete placements is much more complicated. The demands of typical construction schedules dictate that concrete be placed in the most extreme of conditions. In many cases, results may not be as anticipated. This presentation will give practicing engineers examples of extreme placement conditions, typical problems associated with such conditions, means and methods to mitigate the effects of extreme weather on concrete placements. Biography Dr. Jonathan Poole, PE (11 states) is a Principal with MJ2 Consulting, Cedar Park, TX. He received a BS, MS, and PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a long-time voting member of ACI 207 Mass and Thermally Controlled Concrete and ACI 305 Hot Weather Concrete, and is a voting member of the ACI 301 Section 8 Mass Concrete subcommittee. He previously served as president of the Austin SEAoT chapter. Dr. Poole’s graduate research was on mass concrete, and he has co-authored multiple peer reviewed journal articles on concrete materials, and regularly presents at technical conferences. Dr. Poole focuses on investigation of pavement and structural issues, concrete materials evaluation and forensics, mass concrete placements, and construction troubleshooting. He has over 15 years of progressive experience, as a construction materials technician, a heavy civil contractor on a variety of bridge and paving projects, and a forensic engineer managing large, complex investigations.
