Austin New Central Library: A Wonder of Engineering, Architectural, and Construction Achievement
Presentation Description:
“The library is a brilliant beacon of knowledge, technology and inspiration. It’s for you, the people of Austin. It is a space to meet with friends, bring your family (and) connect with the community at large.” --Roosevelt Weeks, Director of Austin Libraries.
The much-anticipated Austin New Central Library opened in October, 2017, to rave reviews and huge crowds. Crowds of people are still flocking to the library three months later, just like the grackles celebrated in the giant public art piece inside.
The Library is a wonder of engineering, architectural, and construction achievement, not to mention civic commitment. Countless dramatic, breathtaking, unique spaces and features are packed into its 270,000 square feet on 6 levels, plus 2 underground parking levels, situated on the north shore of Lady Bird Lake along Austin’s beloved hike & bike trail at the south edge of downtown.
The structural design uses cast-in-place concrete framing not only as an efficient way to support the heavy loads required for a library, but also as a beautiful exposed element in the jaw-dropping 6-story central atrium crossed by playful, zigzagging stairs and bridges.
Structural engineering is on display throughout the building in both obvious and subtle ways:
- steel and glass skybridges
- steel and wood-framed reading porches
- zig-zagging, fanciful steel stairs
- exposed steel beam roof structure
- folded “cowboy hat” atrium roof and skylight
- giant mat foundation (unique in Austin)
Professional Biography:
Luke Nelson, PE, Managing Principal – Datum
Luke joined Datum in 2003 and became a Principal in 2017 in recognition of his outstanding performance and leadership inside and outside the firm. Since 2020, he has served as Managing Principal of Datum’s Austin office. Luke manages some of Austin’s most important projects for key clients, and his project credits include the new Austin Central Library, multiple corporate office buildings, healthcare projects, and several large parking structures. Clients appreciate his can-do attitude and team success approach.
Luke is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction and the Structural Engineers Association of Texas. He received his bachelor’s in civil engineering from The University of Tennessee, and his master’s in civil engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. Luke is involved in many presentations with the UT Cockrell School of Engineering and leads Datum’s recruiting efforts.
